David Wakeling

David has come to psychological work later in life after long successful careers in both the Australian Defence Force and Commonwealth Public Service. Male mental health and helping families thrive were major influencers for David to significantly change direction and move into the psychological profession.

David completed his psychology degree in 2018 and achieved general registration as a psychologist in June 2021 after completing the 4+2 pathway largely in private practice. David is a member of the Australian Psychological Society.

With general psychological therapy, David largely uses a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy in his session work. David enjoys working with clients across the lifespan. David’s aim in working with you is to enable you to move forward from wherever you currently may be. His approach to therapy is collaborative and respectful. David places great importance in you feeling both safe and understood in navigating through your problems. David’s specific areas of interest in applying psychological principles include depression, stress, anxiety and worry, self-esteem, anger, family, grief, poor concentration, work issues and life transitions.

David has a keen interest in successful relationships and what makes relationships strong. David works with couples and uses the well-known and practiced evidence based Gottman Therapy.

David conducts comprehensive cognitive, educational, and psychological assessments focusing on Autism and ADHD. These can be done with children or adults. These assessments are regularly sought for NDIS purposes, school interventions or through referral from paediatricians or psychiatrists.
